Tricyclic antidepressants

A group of drugs related to tricyclic antidepressants is effective in the treatment of depression.

Side effects of their use are: increased action of anticholinergics , increased risk of arrhythmia when taking drugs, pronounced toxic effect when combined with stimulants of the thyroid gland. The end result of the side effects of tricyclic antidepressants is the risk of developing paroxysmal tachycardia.

But all the same, these funds are irreplaceable in the treatment of depression. In this group of antidepressants, there is a drug with minimal side effects. This is pipofezin ( azafen ). It has anti – serotonic action and minimal effect on cholinergic receptors . Pipofezin belongs to the “small” antidepressants with a moderate thymoanaleptic and tranquilizing effect. It is used for depression with decreased mood, asthenia, neuroses. It can be used in outpatient practice for neurotic depression. 

Indications for use:

· Asthenic -depressivnye state;        

· Reactive depression;        

· Somatogenic, vascular depression;        

· Climacteric depression.        

Side effects in the form of nausea, vomiting, dizziness are leveled by reducing the dose. In azafena no holinolitichesky and cardiotoxic effects. It can be combined with tranquilizers, neuroleptics, antidepressants, with the exception of MAO inhibitors. The drug is effective in the treatment of mild to moderate depression. Has a calming and anti-anxiety effect. At the same time, there are no reactions of sedation , drowsiness during the daytime. Taking the medicine in the evening improves falling asleep, which makes it possible to use it in the treatment of elderly people with somatic diseases.
